SIZING & INSTALLATION

As a homeowner you can opt for a generator with a larger KW capacity. Your generator size can be matched to the actual kilowatt consumption that is equivalent to your specific home and equipment therein. In this case you can use everything in the house as if there is no power outage and the generator will be producing / supplying the same amount of electricity as the hydro company does under regular non-emergency conditions. These installations, as compared to managed whole-house backup installations, are more costly than other solutions but still remain affordable and very worthy of the expenditure. Maintenance may be more, as the generator may be larger and more complex. For instance, in case you need over 22kW then your option would be choosing from liquid-cooled units that are more costly on the installation and maintenance.

Many home / business owners believe that there should be a difference in an outage / emergency condition. They feel it's reasonable to have a solution that will suffice with some additional human management. Although they would rather the whole house to be backed up, they would like to manage the load themselves and reduce the cost of purchase and installation. This installation is a very popular solution amongst our customers.

Options include:

1. A generator that will back most of the house, and with your effort to turn off loads that aren't required you can keep within the generators capacity.
2. A smaller generator with up to 8 Smart Management Modules (SMM). This will allow for a smaller generator, costing less and still back up the unnecessary loads. The SMM modules can be placed electrically in line with the larger up to 50Amp non-essential loads in the home. (eg. Air conditioner, or Hot Tub). Under emergency conditions, if the generator is being encroaching upon its total capacity, the SMM will disconnect that item from the system and in a short amount of time try and reintroduce the load. This all happens automatically. It's a very nice solution as you can essentially have your whole home backed up with only minor inconveniences if that. The smaller the generator the more items the SMM units will disconnect. They can be set in priority - it's a fantastic module. The smallest size managed whole-home backup installation we recommend is the 11kW Generac generator for a 100Amp service in which a Smart Management Module (SMM) is installed for the air-conditioning unit.
